Where: River Kitchen
When: Thursday 4th January 2018 @ 5pm
Featuring a fresh lineup of Guitar (Alexander Boulton), Bass Clarinet/Tenor Saxophone (Oscar Laven), Trombone (Kaito Walley), Drums (Hikurangi Schaverian-Kaa) and Upright Bass (Robert Henderson), the quintet performs primarily Boulton’s original compositions, as well as some classics from the pre-bop and bebop eras for good measure.
Drawing inspiration from the great bebop composers (Tadd Dameron, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker) as well as more from the hard bop idiom (Freddie Hubbard, Duke Pearson), the tunes explore the links between the great musical styles of the 20th century, providing an invigorating spin on the style while paying homage to the jazz tradition. Having performed together in a varying range of contexts for a number of years, the members of the group have a chemistry which allows the music to move into new directions every time it is played. For fans of jazz, this group is not one to be missed.
